Early Winter Exhilaration

Nary a day goes by when I don’t look at listings in South Florida and ask myself… why are you here in the winter? By now this is pretty much a rhetorical question that just gets me on the bitchin’ about winter bandwagon. So I write this today to declare that I need your help. I need your help because even I am sick hearing myself complain about winter… and want this to be my one and only rant this entire winter.
To accomplish this, I am looking for ideas to embrace winter and keep hearing some of my winter friends’ words resonating in my ear about the joys of January et al. Perhaps the best saying is the one coined by one of the outdoor clothing companies… “There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing”. I’m going to have to play this on a recorder all night so it will subliminally sink into my head to wake me eager to plow the driveway and shovel the walk on snowy mornings.
I’m also going to try to keep my green thumb green all winter. We’ve already taken in a few plants from outside that I know can winter well in the home. Frankly, our Geraniums have never looked better and the now indoor Rosemary tastes as good as can be. If I’m still gloating in the joy of winter by mid-February… maybe I’ll even start a few outdoor things from seed rather than buying seedlings around Memorial Day.
I will (should, at least) resume my workout protocol that has been well hidden for over a year now. The worst case is that this may well extend my life to see a few more winters. And if I’m sweating, I can at least fool myself that I’m somewhere warm and nice.
The early sunset lends itself to early nights out… and earlier to bed. So I will be hosting happy hours starting promptly at 5 PM at locations throughout the South Shore. Perhaps this could fall into the category of “Misery Loves Company”, but I’m going to re-phrase that to say “Company Ameliorates Misery”... especially when I’m buying!
How about a winter golf league? Don’t be surprised to get an invite from us to play indoor golf at a local simulator in the dead of winter. With enough interest, we may even start the USWM Winter Golf League. We can even serve boat drinks, play Jimmy Buffet and wear tropical shirts.
As you can tell, I’m now psyched for winter. I welcome other ideas, photos or invites for these and other ways to beat the winter blues! In the meantime, the best is yet to come with the Holiday and Year End festivities. I wish you a very warm and fulfilling Holiday Season with a spectacular finish to 2019.
